In early May, Venus began to emerge as an evening star very low in the western twilight. This evening, it sets 27 degrees north of due west (almost three widths of your fist held at arm’s length) nearly an hour after sunset. By June 1 this will have improved to 80 minutes, giving even casual obs...

Like occultations, there is another class of celestial phenomena that hold attraction to the astronomer. Known as 'transit' it represents the passage of a planet across the solar disc. Viewing from the earth there are only two planets that can come in between the Sun and ourselves: Mercury and Ven...

On May 19,1961, the Venera 1 spacecraft passed within 100,000 km of the planet Venus. On February 12, 1961, 00:34:36 UTC, the first planetary probe was launched to Venus by the Soviet Union. The Venus-1 Automatic Interplanetary Station, or Venera 1, was a 643.5 kg probe consisting of a cylindrical b...

A spacecraft built by students has been launched towards another planet for the first time, but it has fallen ominously silent.
