An international team of astronomers using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in Arizona has discovered that the Hercules Dwarf Galaxy is shaped like a cigar. That makes it an oddball among millions of its peers. The Hercules Dwarf is a companion galaxy to our own Milky Way, but has only one ten-mil...

3C442A: Galaxy Collision Causes Role Reversal Astronomers think that there are enormous black holes at the centres of most, if not all, galaxies. These black holes, which can be millions or even billions of times more massive than the Sun, can greatly affect the galaxy and the environments around t...

Malin 1, the prototypical giant low surface brightness galaxy, harbours a normal disk of stars, says an astronomer in California. A Hubble image reveals a barred spiral galaxy at Malin 1's centre. As a result, Malin 1 may no longer be classified as a low surface brightness galaxy. Discovered i...

A European team of astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) has measured the distance to the most remote galaxy so far. By carefully analysing the very faint glow of the galaxy they have found that they are seeing it when the Universe was only about 600 million years old (a redshift of 8.6). T...
