NASA is hosting a media teleconference at 18:00 GMT, Monday, September 12 to announce the detection of the most distant explosion yet, a gamma-ray burst from the edge of the visible universe.
Scientists detected the burst using the Swift satellite. Several ground-based telescopes, including...

Just a reminder to say that on Wednesday, NASA will announce new findings related to short gamma-ray bursts .
Since the 1980s, the two most popular theories of the origin of gamma-ray bursts postulated stupendous explosions at gigantic distances, either from a supernova caused by the...

Gamma-Ray Burst Challenges Theory In a series of landmark observations gathered over a period of four months, NASA's Swift satellite has challenged some of astronomers' fundamental ideas about gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are among the most extreme events in our universe. GRBs are t...

Title: Swift Observations of GRB 051109B Authors: E. Troja, G. Cusumano, V. LaParola, V.Mangano, T. Mineo (INAF - IASFPA) We present Swift observations of GRB 051109B, a soft long burst triggered by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). The soft photon index of the prompt emission suggest it is a X-ray F...

An international team of astronomers reports the discovery of a third short gamma-ray burst (GBR) type, associated with a nearby elliptical galaxy. The low level of star formation in such galaxies and the detection of a second long-lasting flare indicate that this gamma-ray burst is most likely t...

Title: Close Binary Progenitors of Long Gamma Ray Bursts Authors: M.V. Barkov, S.S. Komissarov The strong dependence of the neutrino annihilation mechanism on the mass accretion rate makes it difficult to explain the LGRBs with duration in excess of 100 seconds as well as the precursors separate...

GRB 971214 is a gamma ray burst observed in 1997. It originated 12 billion light years away. For a brief period this was thought by some researchers to have been the most energetic event observed in the universe, but this claim has since been discredited. R.A. = 11h56m30s, Decl. = +65o12'.6 (equino...
