NASA's Grace Sees Rapid Spread in Greenland Ice Loss

A new international study finds that ice losses from Greenland's ice sheet, which have been increasing over the past decade in its southern region, are now spreading rapidly up its northwest coast.
The researchers, including Isabella Velicogna, jointly of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, and the University of California, Irvine, compared data from the JPL-built and managed Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (Grace) mission with continuous GPS measurements made from long-term sites on bedrock on the ice sheet's edges. The Grace and GPS data gave the researchers monthly averages of crustal uplift caused by ice mass loss. They found that the acceleration in ice loss began moving up the northwest coast of Greenland in late 2005. The authors speculate the dramatic ice mass losses on Greenland's northwest coast are caused by some of the big glaciers in the region sliding downhill faster and dumping more ice into the sea.

Supra-glacial lakes focus of study

Rising temperatures on the Greenland ice sheet cause the creation of large surface lakes called supra-glacial lakes. Now a Penn State geographer will investigate why these lakes form and their implications.
NASA awarded Derrick Lampkin, assistant professor of geography, almost $300,000 over three years to look at these lakes.

Tiny orange balls made from Christmas tree baubles could shed new light on how Greenland's Ice Sheet will respond to a warming world.
A Bristol University-led team has shown how the 4cm spheres can go through water channels that run under glaciers and be recovered afterwards.

The Greenland ice sheet is losing its mass faster than in previous years and making an increasing contribution to sea level rise, a study has confirmed.
Published in the journal Science, it has also given scientists a clearer view of why the sheet is shrinking.

There have been many reports in the media about the effects of global warming on the Greenland ice-sheet, but there is still great uncertainty as to why there is an ice-sheet there at all.
Reporting today in the journal Nature, scientists at the University of Bristol and the University of Leeds show that only changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide are able to explain the transition from the mostly ice-free Greenland of three million years ago, to the ice-covered Greenland of today

Researchers monitoring daily satellite images here of Greenlands glaciers have discovered break-ups at two of the largest glaciers in the last month.
They expect that part of the Northern hemispheres longest floating glacier will continue to disintegrate within the next year.
A massive 29-square-kilometer piece of the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland broke away between July 10th and by July 24th. The loss to that glacier is equal to half the size of Manhattan Island. The last major ice loss to Petermann occurred when the glacier lost 86 square kilometres of floating ice between 2000 and 2001.
Petermann has a floating section of ice 16 kilometres wide and 80.4 kilometres long which covers 1,295 square kilometres.

In late July 2006, a 2.2-square-mile lake atop the Greenland Ice Sheet sprung a leak. Like a draining bathtub, the entire lake emptied from the bottom, sending water through a crack that reached the base of the ice sheet 3,215 feet below. Most of the 11.6 billion gallons of water in the lake drained out in 90 minutesat times flowing out faster than the water going over Niagara Falls.

Global warming may not be the only thing melting Greenland. Scientists have found at least one natural magma hotspot under the Arctic island that could be pitching in.
In recent years, Greenlands ice has been melting more and flowing faster into the sea a record amount of ice melted from the frozen mass this summer, according to recently released data and Earths rising temperatures are suspected to be the main culprit.
