Whaling: From 'bloody' to 'boring'?

The biggest issue out there for many supporters and opponents of whaling is Japan's programme in the Southern Ocean - closely followed by Japan's coastal whaling programme, Iceland's fin whale hunt and associated whalemeat exports, and the Norwegian hunt.
But despite all the sound and fury of recent years, inside and outside the IWC, those programmes have continued largely unchanged.
Where there have been changes, they've happened in spite of the IWC.

Off the coast of San Francisco, an unexpected killing challenged the great white shark's supremacy as the ultimate predator when one became prey to a killer whale.  Whale-watchers witnessed a stunning act of nature as a killer whale rose to the water's surface with a great white in its mouth and held it there for 15 minutes.

Sighting in Penzance was a dwarf sperm whale

A marine research charity has confirmed a small whale spotted near Penzance was a dwarf sperm whale.
The animal, little more than the size of a porpoise, swam into Mounts Bay, in west Cornwall, on Sunday.

At least 25 whales have died after being stranded on the coast of Scotland, despite a major rescue operation, an animal welfare charity said Saturday.
Nearly 70 pilot whales found themselves in shallow water at low tide, near the town of Kyle of Durness in northwestern Scotland, according to the charity British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Two whales have died and up to 30 others have become stranded at Kyle of Durness, on the north Highland coast.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said the whales were believed to be from a pod of as many as 60.

Fifteen pilot whales 'stranded' on shore at Durness

Fifteen pilot whales have come ashore at Kyle of Durness on the north Highland coast, according to British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has also been notified of the incident.

Rare Sei whale spotted in Scottish waters

Scientists believe a rare Sei whale has been sighted in Scottish waters - possibly only the ninth such sighting here in the past 50 years.
The mammal was photographed by Scots paramedic Danny Kerr off the west coast, between Islay and Gigha, as he was flying to pick up a patient.
