Scientists in the US are using an underwater vehicle that can "plan its own experiments" on the seafloor.
The "Gulper AUV" is programmed to look for the information that scientists want and plan its own route, avoiding hazardous currents and obstacles.
The research team described this advance at the Ocean Sciences meeting in Portland.

Researchers at NASA and General Motors are collaborating on the development of the latest generation in humanoid robotics, Robonaut2, or R2, for use in the aerospace and automotive industries.
Robonaut1, the predecessor to R2, was designed 10 years ago by the Robot Systems Technology Branch at NASA's Johnson Space Centre in Houston and the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a division of the Department of Defence.

Robots being developed in Nebraska will play a role in NASA's future manned missions into space. These robots won't be playing just any role, either. They'll be playing a life saving role for astronauts.
Taxpayers invest hundreds of thousands of dollars to train an astronaut and it costs hundreds of millions of dollars to launch and carry out space missions which are getting longer and longer in duration.

MAGIC 2010: Super-smart robots wanted for international challenge

The Multi Autonomous Ground-robotic International Challenge (MAGIC 2010) is jointly sponsored by the Australian and US Departments of Defence to attract innovative proposals from worldwide research organisations to develop next-generation fully autonomous ground vehicle systems that can be deployed effectively in military operations and civilian emergency situations.

Miniature robotic ocean explorers to be developed
In an effort to plug gaps of knowledge about key ocean processes, scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have been awarded nearly $1 million from the National Science Foundation to develop a new breed of ocean-probing instruments.
Scripps researchers Jules Jaffe and Peter Franks will be spearheading an effort to design and deploy autonomous underwater explorers, or AUEs, which will trace fine details of fundamental oceanographic mechanisms that are vital to tiny marine inhabitants.

An armada of robots may one day fly above the mountain tops of Saturn's moon Titan, cross its vast dunes and sail in its liquid lakes.
Wolfgang Fink, visiting associate in physics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena says we are on the brink of a great paradigm shift in planetary exploration, and the next round of robotic explorers will be nothing like what we see today.

The Israeli navy will shortly begin deploying unmanned craft along the Mediterranean coast, particularly off the Hamas-held Gaza Strip in the south and Lebanon in the north where Hezbollah guerrillas operate.
These highly manoeuvrable unmanned surface vehicles, operated by remote control from land stations, can carry out a wide range of missions, such as patrolling coastal waters to counter gun-running and infiltration with less prospect of being detected than the much larger manned vessels.

DepthX Robot for Mission to Europa
It has been a NASA dream to see someday they can use a DepthX-like Robot to explore Europa, a frozen moon of Jupiter. Being a mechanical-means for deep sea exploration, DeathX has a good design for the scientists to explore a new world for human. Astrobiologists have long suspected that frozen Europa harbours liquid water - making it one of the most probable places in our solar system to support life.
