Parts of Gujarat were witness to some celestial activity last night after a blazing meteorite was spotted near the northern part of Rajkot district in Gujarat. The celestial shower was witnessed as far as the Kutch area causing panic in the region. The blazing ball of fire is believed to have hit earth with a loud explosion near Maliya Miyana in the Morvi region. Witnesses claimed that the meteorite lit the area along several kilometres like a floodlight.
Fragments of the meteorites that fell in parts of Gujarat have been gathered by scientists who plan to conduct extensive tests to determine their origin, age and chemical composition. The glowing meteorites rained down in Kutch, Jamnagar and Rajkot districts at about 9.30 pm last night, prompting people to make frantic calls to local officials. Fragments of meteorites have been recovered from several villages of Kutch region. The physical research Laboratory (PRL), a premier institution of the department of space, will conduct tests on them, a scientist said today.

Rajkot district official Ajay Chaudhary said that an object emitting bright light landed near Belasan village of Maliya Miyana block, 200 km from here, Monday night. According to reports, the heavenly body lit up several kilometres of the area like a floodlight and hit the Maliya Miyana block at around 9.00 p.m. Mild tremors were also reported in the area.

Chaudhary said people described the meteor as a "great ball of fire" traversing across the sky.
The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), a premier institution of the Department of Space, Government of India, will be conducting elaborate tests on the meteorites which fell in Kutch region of Gujarat on Monday night, a scientist said on Tuesday.
The meteorites will be brought to PRL here this evening where tests will first be conducted to determine the origin of the meteorite, its radioactivity, its age, chemical composition and other features.
A great ball of fire traversing in the sky sent panic waves in Saurastra and Kutch on Monday night. It hit the ground with a great bang near Maliya Miyana. Utensils in the houses in this area were shaken by the shock of the heavenly body. A bright light emitting object hit near Belasan village of Maliya Miyana taluka and tremors were experienced by people in the area, according to DSP Rajkot Rural Ajay Chaudhary. The object lit the area in several kms like a floodlight. The moving object was also seen in Kutch on the North West border of the state. Jamnagar Collector V P Patel received several calls from people of Jodia and Dhrol taluka. It said that it was probably a meteor that hit the area.
A bolide was seen between Halwad and Naliya in Jamnagar and Bhuj, Gujarat, India at 9:30pm on July 31, 2006. Sonic booms, and a meteorite fall were reported in the Little Rann of Kutch.
