Fragments of the meteorites that fell in parts of Gujarat have been gathered by scientists who plan to conduct extensive tests to determine their origin, age and chemical composition.
The glowing meteorites rained down in Kutch, Jamnagar and Rajkot districts at about 9.30 pm last night, prompting people to make frantic calls to local officials.
Fragments of meteorites have been recovered from several villages of Kutch region. The physical research Laboratory (PRL), a premier institution of the department of space, will conduct tests on them, a scientist said today.

The state's Rann of Kutch area witnessed an unexpected meteorite shower and residents panicked after seeing a "big ball of fire" hurtling towards the earth.
Rajkot district official Ajay Chaudhary said that an object emitting bright light landed near Belasan village of Maliya Miyana block, 200 km from Ahmedabad, on Monday night.
According to reports, the heavenly body lit up several kilometres of the area like a floodlight and hit the Maliya Miyana block at around 9.00 pm. Mild tremors were also reported in the area.
Chaudhary said people described the meteor as a "great ball of fire" traversing across the sky.

A great ball of fire traversing in the sky sent panic waves in Saurastra and Kutch on Monday night. It hit the ground with a great bang near Maliya Miyana. Utensils in the houses in this area were shaken by the shock of the heavenly body.
A bright light emitting object hit near Belasan village of Maliya Miyana taluka and tremors were experienced by people in the area, according to DSP Rajkot Rural Ajay Chaudhary. The object lit the area in several kms like a floodlight. The moving object was also seen in Kutch on the North West border of the state.
Jamnagar Collector V P Patel received several calls from people of Jodia and Dhrol taluka. It said that it was probably a meteor that hit the area.
