Spain loses to Chile in telescope site fight

Europe's forthcoming giant telescope will be built in Chile, despite attempts to sway a final vote on its location in favour of Spain, the European Southern Observatory has confirmed.
After ESOs site selection committee recommended Cerro Armazones near Paranal, Chile in March this was always the front runner for the site of the planned European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT).

Location chosen for European Extremely Large Telescope

Europe has chosen the place it wants to build the biggest telescope the world.
The observatory will be constructed on Cerro Armazones, a 3,000m-high mountain in Chile's Atacama Desert.
The E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope) will have a primary mirror 42m in diameter - about five times the width of today's best telescopes.

E-ELT Site Chosen

On 26 April 2010, the ESO Council selected Cerro Armazones as the baseline site for the planned 42-metre European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Cerro Armazones is a mountain at an altitude of 3060 metres in the central part of Chile's Atacama Desert, some 130 kilometres south of the town of Antofagasta and about 20 kilometres from Cerro Paranal, home of ESOs Very Large Telescope.

For astronomers, it appears that not only does size really matter but so does an eye-opening location.
That is why an international group of four professional star gazers have banded together to back Chile's Atacama desert as home to the world's biggest telescope, to be built in 2018 based on its geographical advantages.
The high-altitude Armazones mountain in the desert in northern Chilean desert is the perfect place for the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) to be set up, because of skies that are cloud-free 360 nights a year, they say.
