According to an Indonesian government official the earthquake that shook the area around the ancient royal city of Yogyakarta on Saturday has killed 2,711 people.

"The total for now is 2,711 people killed. The number keeps climbing by the hour because evacuation is still in process" - Desmawati, an official at the Social Affairs Ministry’s disaster task force in Jakarta.

At least 1,700 people have suffered serious injuries while 872 were slightly hurt.
Yogyakarta is in the heartland of Indonesia’s main island of Java and stands near Mount Merapi, a volcano that has been on top alert for a major eruption this month.
Subandrio, a Vulcanologist in Yogyakarta said the quake was not caused by the volcano, but Merapi’s activity increased after the shock.
Hot, dense gas clouds coming out of Mount Merapi after the quake stretched 4 km down the mountainside. They reached 6 km before Merapi’s last major eruption.

Local police have said that electricity and communications across the city of Jogyakarta, Indonesia, were knocked out by the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that occurred at 22:54:01 (UTC) on Friday, May 26, 2006.
Shortly before the quake, the nearby Mount Merapi volcano sent out a cloud of hot gas and ash. It was not immediately clear if the volcanic activity and the earthquake were linked.
