Golf in space

It will be a game of golf for Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin aboard the International Space Station as he plans a spacewalk Wednesday.
He is expected to hit a golf ball from 220 miles above the Earth using special club as he begins the spacewalk. The light weight ball will be placed on the top of the Russian docking port and he will have to swing the club with one hand as the spacesuit is too heavy for a two-handed grip.

The first HDTV broadcast from space took place Wednesday, featuring the International Space Station's Expedition 14 Cmdr. Michael Lopez-Alegria.
The telecast was carried by Discovery HD Theatre and NHK and was also shown at Discovery Channel stores. Known as the Space Video Gateway, the system transmits high bandwidth digital television signals to the ground that are not only spectacular, but also valuable to scientists, engineers and managers.

The International Space Station may soon have its first policy allowing crew members to intentionally pitch unneeded gear overboard. This may temporarily increase the amount of space junk orbiting Earth, but scientists say it will pose no extra danger to the crew or other spacecraft.
Tools and other gear have accidentally floated away during spacewalks. But NASA has shied away from intentionally jettisoning gear off the ISS in the past because of the threat of space junk hitting the station or other spacecraft.
Even tiny flecks of paint have cracked the windows of the space shuttle orbiter because they zoom around Earth at thousands of kilometres per hour.

HDTV broadcast

NASA makes history next week with the first live broadcasts from space in High Definition television (HDTV). NASA, in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Discovery HD Theatre and Japanese broadcast network NHK will produce the broadcasts on Nov. 15.
Two live HDTV broadcasts will feature Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria on the International Space Station, with Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter serving as camera operator aboard the 220-mile-high laboratory. The broadcasts will be carried by Discovery HD Theatre and NHK. Discovery HD Theatre will carry the special broadcast live at 10:30 a.m. CST and will be shown at Discovery Channel stores.

A Russian cargo spacecraft has failed to dock properly with the orbiting International Space Station.
Mission controllers said the problem was caused by an antenna on the cargo vehicle, which failed to fold away.
The Progress craft was taking water, food and other supplies to the crew, who are said to be in no danger.

The international space station's three-man crew faces no danger after a mechanical problem prevented a Russian cargo ship from being fully moored in at the international space station Thursday
The antenna on Progress failed to fold, keeping the ship from hermetically linking up to the station and thus making it impossible for the crew to get access to the ship,
Russian Space Agency spokesman Igor Panarin said the station's crew has enough supplies for a safe stay in orbit, even if the problem could not be fixed quickly.

Astronauts currently working at the International Space Station will have their six-month mission extended by another month to avoid early-spring flooding on the Kazakh steppe where they will be landing, a Russian space official said Wednesday.
According to a revised schedule, U.S. astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin of the Expedition 14 crew, who began working at the world's sole orbital station on September 20, will return to Earth in April instead of March.
On their return journey, they will be joined by the fifth space tourist, Hungarian-born American software billionaire Charles Simonyi, expected to arrive at the ISS with the 15th crew.

Help Name the Next Station Module

The International Space Station is growing, and NASA's Node 2 is the next U.S. pressurized module scheduled for installation on the orbiting laboratory. The node will provide more room for station crews to live and work, but it needs a name.
Students in kindergarten through grade 12 attending U.S. schools and children of American personnel overseas are being asked to help NASA name the module and become part of the history of the station. The module is at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre, and is targeted for launch in late 2007. The node will be a connecting port and passageway to additional international science labs and space supply vehicles. It also will be a work platform for the station's robotic arm.
Name the International Space Station Node 2 Challenge requires students to work together as a class or school to create their own Node 2 model. Students will name their node, write a brief description explaining the choice and take digital pictures to send to NASA.
