Conditions are anything but normal on Easter Island, deemed by astronomers the best place to witness Sunday's alignment of sun, moon and Earth for a fleeting four minutes and 41 seconds.
Some weather forecasts, however, warn of cloudy skies -- potentially dashing hopes of a clear view here.
The total solar eclipse will begin at 18:15 GMT, when the umbra or shadow falls on the South Pacific about 700 kilometres southeast of Tonga, according to veteran NASA eclipse specialist, Fred Espanak.

Avatar director James Cameron will be among thousands of visitors turning their eyes skywards in French Polynesia on Sunday for the islands' first solar eclipse in 350 years.
The Canadian film-maker is one of more than 5,000 tourists expected in the Pacific islands for the eclipse, a mini-boom likely to bring in around 8.4 million euros (10.6 million dollars) for the local economy, according to tourism minister Steeve Hamblin.

Remote and mysterious Easter Island is bracing for an influx of tourists and problems with Sunday's solar eclipse that is being seen as a mixed blessing for the tiny Pacific territory.
The Chilean island of only 160 square kilometres is expecting an estimated 4,000 visitors, doubling the population of the barren isle which already suffers from water pollution and deforestation.
Four flights were to land Sunday at Mataveri airport with 1,032 people, and more visitors were expected on a dozen boats arriving during the week.
