Gerard 't Hooft shared the prize for physics in 1990 1999. Among his admirers were an astronomical couple who had come across an asteroid or two and wanted one named in his honour.
The result is known as 9491 Thooft, the apostrophe lost in the ether and the T and H having collided. This was the handiwork of the International Astronomical Union.
