The first asteroid discovered from Ireland for 160 years was confirmed in the early hours yesterday after first being spotted on Tuesday by an enthusiastic stargazer from his back garden.
"I've been doing asteroid work for a good few years but I can't think of anything better than discovering one, particularly as an amateur" - Dave McDonald.
A magnitude 20 asteroid, 2008 TM9, has been discovered by Irish amateur astronomer Dave McDonald, from his observatory in Celbridge in Co Kildare . The last such discovery of an asteroid from Ireland was the discovery of (9) Metis, by Andrew Graham at Markree Observatory, on 25 April 1848.
Brief details of asteroid 2008 TM9 that we have at the moment are that it is a main-belt asteroid and orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter. It has a diameter of somewhere around 2km. Source
