A new magnitude 15.2  comet was discovered by Rob H. McNaught (Siding Spring) on  images taken with the 0.5 meter Uppsala Schmidt  telescope on January 10, 2008.
The comet was confirmed on  the following day by J Young (Table Mountain Observatory, Wrightwood), E Guido and G Sostero (Mayhill), S. G McAndrew (North Ryde), and Q-Z Ye (Lulin Observatory).
The preliminary orbital elements of comet C/2008 A1 (McNaught) indicate a perihelion passage  on November 03, 2008 at a distance of 1.5 AU from the Sun.
The comet is only visible  in the southern hemisphere, and should reach a magnitude 10 at the end of October 2008.
With is this discovery, Rob McNaught now has  40 comets to his credit.
