The 110 - 240 metre wide asteroid 2007 VK184 will make a close pass (67.3 lunar distances, 0.1730 AU), travelling at 20.72 km/second, to the Earth-Moon system on the 23rd May 2014 @ 07:26 UT ±00:01.

As time goes by, stories and news of life ending, or at least life devastating, asteroids continue to raise the publics attention; although, attention is probably deserved, even if there is nothing we can do about it.
Scientists have recently discovered one such asteroid that while low on the damage scale (low being a relative term considering how large our planet is) is currently high on the risk meter.
2007 VK184 has been picked up by astronomers, including those at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory Near-Earth Objects Program. Currently 90 million kilometres from Earth, 130 meters across and travelling at 70,000 km/h, it could impact the planet sometime in 2048.

2007 VK184 is an asteroid which is listed on the Near Earth Object Risk List with a Torino Scale of Level 1. As of December 2007, it is the only near Earth object besides asteroid (29075) 1950 DA to be listed above Level 0. The object was discovered on November 12th 2007, by the Catalina Sky Survey.
According to the Near Earth Object-list, 95 observations over 35 days suggests the asteroid has a probability of 1 in 3130 chance to hit the Earth during June 2048.
