The International Astronomical Union approved the naming of minor planet 49272 to Bryce Canyon this month. The asteroid, discovered by astronomer Roy Tucker in 1998 is one of literally hundreds of thousands of asteroids circling the sun ranging in size from several yards across to hundreds of miles across and have various shapes. Astronomers refer to these bodies as minor planets. After Tucker discovered minor planet 49272 he was asked by NASA solar system ambassador Patrick Wiggins to name the asteroid in honour of the national park and to recognise its public stargazing programs.
