The Space shuttle has been fuelled and is being readied to be launched from pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Centre. Liftoff time is scheduled for 23:38 GMT (7:38 p.m. EDT.)
NASAs weather experts say there is a 70 percent chance of good liftoff conditions Friday evening.
"We do expect to see some afternoon thunderstorms on launch day, but by launch time that weather should move inland with the sea breeze and the winds in the upper-levels will be pushing all that weather off towards Orlando, so for the coast here the weather looks reasonably promising - Kathy Winters, shuttle weather officer.
A union representing 570 space shuttle program workers at the Kennedy Space Center voted to strike, less than a week before the planned launch of the shuttle Atlantis. The International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, which represents the United Space Alliance employees, rejected the companys contract offer Saturday morning.
NASA is targeting June 8 as the next possible launch opportunity for space shuttle Atlantis STS-117 mission to the International Space Station. Tuesdays decision by agency management followed a meeting that reviewed the progress in repairing insulating foam on the shuttles external fuel tank, which was damaged during a sudden hail storm Feb. 26 at NASAs Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. That damage required engineers to repair approximately 2,660 sites on the tank. The meeting also included an assessment of using the repaired external tank for the STS-117 mission versus swapping to one that arrived last week from the manufacturing plant in New Orleans. Managers decided to finish repairs to Atlantis current tank and use it for STS-117. The tank that arrived Friday will be prepared for space shuttle Endeavours STS-118 mission to the space station and now is targeted for launch in August.
