The government took the threat of UFOs so seriously in the 1950s that UK intelligence chiefs met to discuss the issue, newly-released files show.
Ministers even went on to commission weekly reports on UFO sightings from a committee of intelligence experts.

Hundreds of UK UFO reports released

Thousands of UFOs have been spotted in the last 20 years around the UK, according to newly released documents.
More than 6,000 pages of reports describe people's experiences with unidentified flying objects between 1994 and 2000.
They include reported sightings over Chelsea Football Club and former home secretary Michael Howard's Kent home.

A former head of the military told the defence secretary that a UFO sighting dubbed Britain's Roswell could be a "banana skin", official files show.
In 1985 Lord Hill-Norton wrote to Michael Heseltine about the "Rendlesham incident" in 1980, when US airmen in Suffolk thought they saw an alien ship

Danish UFO files now open to public
The top secret UFO files compiled by Denmark's Air Force over the past 30 years have finally been declassified and opened to public perusal. Some 15,000 reported UFO sightings are detailed in the files, offering plenty for UFO buffs to drool over. The Danish government decided to release the files because they felt "there was nothings secret in the files."

UFO expert Nick Pope has revealed RAF pilots have tried to shoot down unidentified aircraft.
Mr Pope, who used to work for the Ministry of Defence investigating UFO sightings, alien abductions and other strange phenomena, said British jets have regularly been scrambled to attack flying objects but have never brought one down.

Britain releases UFO files
Monday's release is the second batch of UFO files that Britain's military has put out this year.

Alitalia pilot Achille Zaghetti thought it was a missile.
Zaghetti was at the helm of a jet from Milan to London's Heathrow Airport on the evening of April 21, 1991 when a flying object streaked across his field of vision.

"At once I said, 'look out, look out,' to my co-pilot, who looked out and saw what I had seen. s soon as the object crossed us I asked to the ACC (area control center) operator if he saw something on his screen and he answered 'I see an unknown target 10 nautical miles behind you.'"

Revealed: How the Government studied the paranormal for use in war on terror
Secret documents have revealed the MoD have been studying the paranormal and other unexplained scientific phenomenon for use in the war against terror.
The newly released files show that just after 11/9, the Ministry of Defence conducted a research project into psychics - with the possibility they could be used to locate terrorist cells.
Last night saw the UK debut of the eagerly anticipated US TV show Fringe, which takes its name from fringe science, an umbrella term for such bizarre notions as ghosts, UFOs, psychics and invisibility.

Inevitably, the Ministry of Defence papers, released to the public for the first time, will be known as Britain's X-Files. Over the next three or four years, 160 files will be handed over to the National Archives. Covering 1978 to 1987, the first group of eight files, one of which is more than 450 pages long, is available via its website today.

Terrified Brits reported almost 100 UFO sightings to the Ministry of Defence last year.
Quite what they wanted the bowler-hated ones to do about the lights whizzing through the skies is unclear, but the full report makes for entertaining reading.
