The Minotaur I launch vehicle was successfully launched from the Wallops Flight Facility at 11:00 GMT (7am local time), carrying the TacSat-2 and GeneSat-1 satellites.

LAUNCH UPDATE: 10:20 p.m. 12/14/06:
The Air Force TacSat-2/Minotaur 1 launch has been rescheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16. The launch window is 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The TacSat-2 micro satellites software issues have been resolved and it has been cleared for launch.

The first attempt to launch a rocket from the mid-Atlantic region's commercial spaceport has been delayed until at least Friday while teams continue working on a glitch with software for the Air Force satellite that is the main payload, officials said Tuesday.
The launch window has been extended from Dec. 20 to Dec. 22, with the launch time from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day, said Keith Koehler, spokesman for NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, where the spaceport's launch pad is located.

At a 5 a.m. press conference, officials said the launch could be delayed for up to two or three weeks. The earliest the launch could take place is Wednesday morning.

"I don't think we would try a launch attempt tomorrow morning simply because we've kind of wrung out our team working on this issue" - Neil Peck, program manager for the Air Force's TacSat-2 satellite.

All systems appeared to be "go" for tomorrow's planned 7 a.m. liftoff of one of the biggest rockets ever launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, 40 miles south of Ocean City.
The four-stage Minotaur I rocket will carry a pair of government satellites. If it blasts off on time and skies are clear, the rocket's climb toward orbit might be visible hundreds of miles from the seaside launch pad.

The launch window extends from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m., with further opportunities daily through Dec. 20.

NASA's GeneSat-1 is set to launch into orbit on an Air Force rocket on Dec. 11 from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Va. The launch window extends from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST.
GeneSat-1 is a 10-pound satellite that will carry bacteria inside a miniature laboratory to study how the microbes may respond in spaceflight. It is a secondary payload on an Air Force four-stage Minotaur 1 rocket delivering the Air Force TacSat 2 satellite to orbit.
GeneSat-1's onboard micro-laboratory includes sensors and optical systems that can detect proteins that are the products of specific genetic activity. The GeneSat-1 ground control station at Ames will receive data radioed from the micro-laboratory after it has completed its observations and tests of the bacteria inside.
The biological test will last only 96 hours, but the GeneSat-1 team will evaluate the stability of the orbiting payload's systems for four months to a year. Air pressure, temperature and humidity are controlled aboard GeneSat-1. Light emitting diodes illuminate analytical sensors that help scientists detect genetic activity by measuring proteins that glow.

Early Monday morning is “T minus 300.”
The countdown to liftoff of the first orbital rocket launched from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility range here in more than 10 years will start at 2 a.m. Monday. In a best-case scenario everyone is hoping for, the five-hour countdown will culminate at 7 a.m. with a blast into space.
The launch window for the Dec. 11 Air Force Research Lab’s TacSat-2 satellite runs to 10:30 a.m., but if fog cover or other weather events preclude a Monday launch by then, back-up dates run through Dec. 20.

Officials are saying the December launch of a tactical satellite, dubbed TacSat-2, will serve as the predecessor for rapid satellite production, launch and operation.
Managed by the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate here, TacSat-2 has evolved into a responsive space demonstrator ready for flight in 24 months. Similar military spacecraft have taken 10 years or longer to go from the drawing board into the heavens. In addition, the micro satellite provides an inexpensive alternative to most current defence-related space systems, which cost about 90 percent more.
