The main body of a new submarine fibre cable system, called the Trans-Pacific Express (TPE), kicked off its construction at sea in Qingdao, a coastal city in east China, on Monday.
The new cable, the first to directly link the United States and China by skipping over Japan, is expected to be put into use in July next year before the opening of the Beijing Olympic Games on August 8.
It would become the submarine fibre cable with the largest capacity and the longest span for China, linking the Chinese mainland with Taiwan, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States.
The TPE would use the latest optical technologies to provider greater capacity and higher speeds to meet the rapid increase in demand for IP, data and voice communications between the Asian regions and the U.S.
The initial installed capacity of the TPE is set at 1.28 terabits per second and its design capacity could reach 5.12 terabits per second.

The news may overflow with stories about the social networking giants, such as Facebook and MySpace, but a horde of companies are doing their best to reduce the fundamental features of these websites to mere commodities. These up-and-coming companies provide so-called white label social networking platforms that enable their customers to build their own social networks (often from scratch) and to tailor those networks to a range of purposes.
The idea of white labelling a network is to make the platform provider as invisible as possible to the social networks users and to brand the network with the builders identity or intent. While definitions of social networking may vary, social networks are primarily defined by member profiles and some sort of user generated content.

The term Web 2.0 was dreamed up to describe community-driven phenomena such as blogs and wikis and the enormously priced businesses they inspired.
But not everyone is buying into the label.
Participants at a recent Web 2.0 conference organised by Nomades Advanced Technologies Interactive Workshops (NATIW) in Geneva, Switzerland were scratching their heads as to what it all means.
