NGC 6309 (also PK 9+14.1, CS=14.4 and Box nebula) is a magnitude +11.5 quadrupolar planetary nebula located about 7700 light years away in the constellation Ophiuchus.
It has a luminosity of about 1800 times of the Sun.
The magnitude of the central star is +13.7
The nebula is located 17' east of the magnitude: +8.0 star HD 155612.

NGC 6309 was discovered by the German astronomer Wilhelm Tempel using a 11 inch (27.94 cm) refractor at the the Arcetri Observatory in 1876, but it was first identified as a planetary nebula by Edward C. Pickering in 1882.
