A 'toast' to Copernicus Sentinel-2B as it delivers its first images

Just over a week after being lofted into orbit, the European Union's Sentinel-2B satellite delivered its first images of Earth, offering a glimpse of the 'colour vision' it will provide for the Copernicus environmental monitoring programme.
With a swath width of 290 km, the satellite's first acquisition began over the Baltic Sea and made a strip-like observation through eastern Europe, ending in northern Libya.

Sentinel satellite launched to picture Planet Earth

One of the key spacecraft in Europe's new multi-billion-euro Earth observation (EO) programme has launched from French Guiana.
Sentinel-2B carries a large camera to image all land surfaces and coastal waters in visible and infrared light.
It joins an identical spacecraft, Sentinel-2A, already in orbit.

Second 'colour vision' satellite for Copernicus launched

The ESA-developed Sentinel-2B satellite was launched today, doubling the coverage of high-resolution optical imaging in the Sentinel-2 mission for the European Union Copernicus environmental monitoring system.
The 1.1 tonne satellite was carried into orbit on a Vega rocket from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana at 01:49 GMT on 7 March (02:49 CET; 22:49 local time, 6 March).

For its third launch of the year - and the ninth to be performed by the Vega launcher since its first liftoff from the Guiana Space Center in 2012 - Arianespace will orbit the Sentinel-2B satellite, a part of Europe's Copernicus Earth observation program, on behalf of the European Commission within the scope of a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA).

Sentinel-2 teams prepare for space

...the Sentinel-2A craft is about to be joined by its twin, Sentinel-2B, which will complete the pairing that will cover all Earth's land surfaces, large islands, and inland and coastal waters every five days.
Sentinel-2B will be lofted into orbit by a Vega rocket from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana at 01:49 GMT (02:49 CET) on 7 March, and teams at ESA's mission control centre in Darmstadt, Germany, will be watching closely.

Green for Sentinel-2

On Monday this week, 30 days before the scheduled launch of Sentinel-2B, flight director Pier Paolo Emanuelli reported that the 'ground segment' - the hardware, systems and networks used on Earth to control the satellite in orbit - is 'green' for launch.
Liftoff is scheduled for 7 March at 01:49 GMT on a Vega rocket from Kourou, French Guiana. The mission control team at ESA's mission control centre in Darmstadt, Germany, will take over control of Sentinel-2B about 58 minutes later.
