Visions of space on the 50th anniversary of the first spacewalk

On 18 March 1965, Soviet astronaut Alexei Leonov took the first spacewalk. Months later, the first American took the big leap. Images from those first steps stirred the public imagination.

Alexey Leonov became the first person to leave the Voskhod 2 spacecraft in a specialised spacesuit to conduct a 12 minute "spacewalk" on March 18, 1965

    • 08:28:13 UTC: The Voskhod 2 airlock is depressurised by Leonov.
    • 08:32:54 UTC: Leonov opens the Voskhod 2 airlock hatch.
    • 08:34:51 UTC: EVA 1 start  Leonov leaves airlock.
    • 08:47:00 UTC: EVA 1 end  Leonov reenters airlock.
    • 08:48:40 UTC: Hatch on the airlock is closed and secured by Leonov.
    • 08:51:54 UTC: Leonov begins to repressurise the airlock.
    • Duration: 12 minutes
