Five powerful earthquakes have been reported at Bárðabunga stratovolcano.
"Yes something triggered some powerful earthquakes this morning," Bryndís Yr Gísladóttir, a specialist in natural hazards with the Icelandic Met Office, told Vísir.

Council members in the rural district of Skutustadahreppur, which boasts a population of 371, took on the hefty responsibility to officially name the lava field known conversationally to locals as Holuhraun, the Iceland Review news website reports. After considering four names for the volcano - Flaedahraun, Holuhraun, Nornahraun and Urdarbruni - the vote was carried to officially use the name Holuhraun, despite only getting the backing of two of the five council members, Icelandic newspaper Visir said.

Bárðarbunga Volcano Might Erupt Again

Geologists are now investigating data, indicating that magma might be accumulating again under Bárðarbunga volcano in Vatnajökull glacier. The Holuhraun eruption, which took place between August 31, 2014, and February 27, 2015, was part of a series of events which started in the volcano in 1974 and might provide evidence about the behavior of the volcano in the future.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has lowered its aviation warning from red to orange near the Bardarbunga volcano.
Earlier on Friday, a fissure eruption about one kilometre long, started spewing lava but Iceland's Met Office says the activity has now subsided.

The magma from Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano could be moving towards another large volcanic system.
Data recorded by a team from the University of Cambridge suggests that 50 million cubic metres of molten rock has moved in the last 24 hours.
If it continues on a northern trajectory it could feed into the Askja volcanic system, potentially triggering a large eruption.

Iceland raises Bardarbunga volcano alert to orange

The risk of an eruption at Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano has increased, with signs of "ongoing magma movement", Iceland's meteorological office says.
The risk level to the aviation industry has been raised to orange, the second-highest level, the met office said.

Intense seismic activity in Iceland's Bárdarbunga volcano

Seismic activity in Bárðarbunga, a large sub-glacial volcano in Iceland, has increased. A seismic swarm has been ongoing since 3AM this morning, and near continuous earthquakes have been occurring ever since.
