NGC 4001 (also MCG 8-22-47 and PGC 37656) is a magnitude +15.3 elliptical galaxy located 647 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.
The galaxy was discovered by Anglo-Irish astronomer George Johnstone Stoney using a 182.88 cm (72 inch) speculum reflector at Birr Castle on the 13th April 1852.
