NGC 4040 (also MCG 3-31-18, UGC 7013 and PGC 54014) is a magnitude +13.3 elliptical galaxy located 318 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices.
The galaxy was discovered by American astronomer Lewis Swift using a 40.6 cm (16 inch) Alvan Clark and Sons refractor at the Warner Observatory, East Avenue, Rochester, New York, on the 30th March 1887.
