NGC 2397 (also ESO 58-30, IRAS 07214-6854 or PGC 20766) is a magnitude +11.8 spiral galaxy located 63 million light-years away in the constellation Volans. It is located in the vicinity of NGC 2397A and NGC 2397B. The nucleus consists of old yellow and red stars, with younger stars formed within the outer blue spiral arms.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflector at the Cape of Good Hope on the 21st February 1835.
