The Night Sky in August 2012

The planet Neptune recently completed its first complete revolution round the Sun since its discovery in 1846. It returned to its position in the watery zone close to Capricorn's brightest star Algiedi. This interesting star consists of two components each of which is itself a double star, a challenge for binoculars.
Capricorn contains several interesting objects. These include three spiral galaxies known as the HCG 87 group, all equidistant at 400 million light-years, that are rushing towards each other. They will eventually collide forming one huge galaxy, an event presaging the eventual collision between the Andromeda galaxy and our own Milky Way.
