The Science Behind Ridley Scott's Vision of Aliens Populating Earth

Over the years, the case for the cosmos as a biological incubator has only built. Amino acids have been found in interstellar clouds - a fact that is true of water too. Of the 20 amino acids that exist on Earth, eight have so far been detected in meteorites. Tellingly, while amino acids can form in either a left-handed or right-handed configuration - essentially mirror images of each other - life on Earth uses just the lefty variety. And of the eight acids brought in by meteorites, only one - glycine - is a righty. Biologists have never been able to explain why Earthly life prefers left-handed amino acids since both types should work equally well. The answer may be that that's simply the kind that happened to rain down on us and we used what we got.

The stars of "Prometheus" landed in London on a special blue carpet Thursday night for the world premiere of Sir Ridley Scott's new sci-fi thriller.
Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Guy Pearce joined the director to meet fans at Leicester Square.

The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron. Set in the late 21st century, the story centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as they follow a star map discovered among the remnants of several ancient Earth civilisations. Led to a distant world and an advanced civilisation, the crew seeks the origins of humanity, but instead discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human race.
