Esrange Space Center celebrating 50th anniversary this weekend
The celebration will start off with an Executive Roundtable in Kiruna on Saturday, 22 October, focusing on the coming 50 years of Esrange and space industrial development. This will be followed by a press event and gala dinner. Representatives from the Swedish Governmental offices, as well as from national and international space agencies and leading representatives from the international space industry will participate, including ESA's Director General, Jan Wörner, and Swedish Space Minister, Helene Hellmark-Knutsson. Investigation suggests investment in Esrange Space Center
On Monday, 17 October, the results of a Swedish Governmental Offices analysis regarding development of the potential capacity at Esrange towards launching of small satellites was briefed to the Space Minister of Sweden. Mr Jan Nygren, who is responsible for the analysis, recommended the Government to further work on realisation of the opportunities. He commented the report by saying that Esrange current capability provide good basic prerequisites that could be further developed in a cost effective way to establish a facility for launching small satellites. 50 years have passed since the first sounding rocket was launched from Esrange Space Center. Since then, Esrange, located in Kiruna above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, has served the scientific community well. More than 550 rockets and 520 balloons have been launched over the years, using the vast unpopulated area. And Esrange Satellite Station has grown into one of the world's busiest ground stations, serving a large variety of customers. Read more

Spaceport America has entered into an agreement with a Swedish spaceport to collaborate in developing the commercial space industry, New Mexico officials said today.
Officials from the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Spaceport Sweden to align with Spaceport America as 'Sister Spaceports'. Working in collaboration, the two spaceports will increase global cooperation in the commercial space industry, promote cultural understanding and stimulate local economic development, tourism and education.
Sweden on course to become a global spaceport This is not science fiction. Swedish company Spaceport Sweden is reportedly being courted by Sir Richard Bransons Virgin Galactic as potential major operational partner in Virgins space tourism plans. The Swedish company is working in cooperation with the town of Kiruna to become Europes first base for personal suborbital spaceflight. Virgin Galactic is on course to become the worlds first private company to offer commercial space flights for ordinary people. Richard Branson recently gave an interview on Swedish TV4 and had a lot to say about the potential of Kiruna as a possible base for European spaceflights.
