Reader Lisa Warren snapped three quick photos of a meteor streaking across the sky above Reno on Sunday morning, April 22. The meteor created a sonic boom heard over hundreds of miles from the Reno-Tahoe area to Southern California.

The first fragments of the California-Nevada daylight fireball were recovered Tuesday by Robert Ward, one of the most prolific meteorite hunters in the world.
After a preliminary assessment, it appears that the California fall is a particularly rare type of meteorite called a CM carbonaceous chondrite.

NASA Calls Meteor Eruption "Huge Event"

If you heard a large boom just before 8am Sunday, you weren't alone.
Dr. Bill Cooke with the Lead, NASA Meteroid Environments Office said the meteor eruption caused quite the commotion.
Cooke said the meteor's energy was a whopping 3.8 kilotons of TNT. That's about one fourth of the "little boy" bomb, which was dropped on Hiroshima during WWII.

Scientist says sound signal from exploding meteor lasted 18 minutes

A Canadian scientist who specialises in meteor sound waves said Monday the infrasonic signal from Sundays event felt over a wide swath of Northern Nevada and California was "very strong" and lasted more than 18 minutes at a monitoring station 400 miles away.

Did you hear it? A big boom is the talk of the town

It was the topic of conversation at Reno's earth day celebration. People were looking for answers at event. UNR Planetarium leader Dan Ruby is pretty sure he has an answer, it was a meteorite.

If the boom was a signal that an outer space rock made it way through the atmosphere, then there could be a rock or rocks now on Terra Firma. So far, no one has called authorities or television stations to report "a hit."

 Large meteor seen over Sierra sky this morning

Earth day 2012 started out with a boom this morning when a ground shaking explosion was heard by residents in El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and San Joaquin counties. Dozens of callers reported seeing a 'meteor' over the Sierra sky at approximately 7:45 a.m.
