An amateur team discovered the unusual asteroid, dubbed 2012 DA14, on 22 February. Its small size and orbit meant that it was spotted only after it had flown past Earth at about seven times the distance of the Moon. Read more
The asteroid will make a return pass (0.000184 AU), travelling at 8.16 km/second, to the Earth-Moon system on the 15th February, 2013 @ 19:27 UT ±00:24.
Huge asteroid hurtling towards Earth will fly past our planet so close it will go UNDER many man-made satellites
A 150-foot asteroid orbiting Earth called 2012 DA14 will pass so close to Earth it will fly UNDER man-made satellites orbiting our planet. Nasa's Impact Risk report said that the odds of the space rock actually hitting our planet are very low indeed - but on February 15 next year it will pass just 17,000 miles from Earth, closer than 'geostationary' satellites. Asteroid 2012 DA14 heads for Earth next year By Anne Sewell
Scientists are predicting that the asteroid 2012 DA14 has a good chance of colliding with Earth in eleven months. Watch the skies in February 2013! According to RT, NASA has confirmed that the 60 meter (or 197 feet) asteroid, which was spotted by Spanish stargazers in February this year, has a good chance of colliding with earth. Read more
Ed ~ No 'scientists' are predicting an impact for 2012 DA14 in February 2013. This is a made up story.
