A major magnitude 8.1 earthquake occurred at 04:23:20 (UTC) on Saturday, January 13, 2007, east of the Kuril Islands, about 505 km SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Kuril Islands, Russia, at a depth of 10 km.

A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred at 17:37:06 (UTC) on Saturday, January 13, 2007, east of the Kuril Islands, about 420 km SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Kuril Islands, Russia, at a depth of 10 km.

Four small tsunami hit coastal areas of Hokkaido and Iwate Prefecture on Wednesday night, following a powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.1 near the Russian-controlled Etorofu Island off Hokkaido, the Meteorological Agency announced.
A 40-centimeter high tsunami hit Nemuro on the east coast of Hokkaido at 9:29 p.m., while at 9:55 p.m. a 20-centimeter tsunami hit Kushiro, also in Hokkaido. Another 40-centimeter tsunami hit Tokachi Port in Hiroocho at 10:06 p.m. and a 20-centimeter tsunami was observed at Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, at 10:11 p.m., according to the agency.

A strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred at 21:22:23 (UTC) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006, in the Kuril Islands region, about 400 km SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Kuril Islands, at a depth of 22.9 km.

Small tsunami waves have hit northern Japan, according to the country's meteorological agency (JMA).
It said a 40cm wave hit Nemuro port in Hokkaido island. Another one of 20cm was recorded.
The JMA initially expected a tsunami of at least two metres high after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Kuril Islands, north of Japan.

A major magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred at 11:14:16 (UTC) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006, in the Kuril Islands region, about 443 km (275 miles) ENE (67) from Kuril'sk, Kuril Islands, at a depth of 27.7 km.

Location 46.683N, 153.224E

A tsunami warning has been issued for the eastern part of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island.

A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred at 21:27:43 (UTC) on Sunday, November 12, 2006, in the Kuril Islands region, about 295 km SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Russia.
The hypocentral depth was estimated to be 47.9 km.
