A magnitude 14.0 Type Ia supernova, 2011ao, was discovered by J. Newton, T. Puckett  and A. Kroes on the 3rd March, 2011, in the spiral galaxy IC 2973 in the constellation Ursa Major.
The supernova is located 2.88" east and 9.9" south from the center of the galaxy.

Position(2000): RA = 11 53 51.02, Dec = +33°21'46.2"
z = 0.010706

The galaxy also hosted Supernova 1991A
