A great and devastating earthquake of Mw 8.6 occurred on 15 August 1950 at about 14h 09m 30s (UTC) near the Indo- China border, close to NW trending Mishmi- Lohit structure. Strictly this is not a Himalayan thrust earthquake; rather a right lateral strike slip event along a N28 W S28 E strike, 60° easterly dipping fault ( see Ben- Menahem et al 1974; PEPI). The 1950 Medog earthquake (also known as the Assam Earthquake), occurred on August 15, 1950, and had a magnitude of 8.6. The epicentre was actually located near Rima, in Tibet. However, the earthquake was destructive in both Assam and Tibet, and 1,526 people were killed. Read more
