The devastating conclusion that Japan's Fukushima nuclear meltdown was an accident waiting to happen has grabbed the headlines. But the investigation has also unearthed worrying questions about the catastrophe and its human cost that deserve attention. Buried in the main body of the official report are new insights into how events unfolded and how as many as 60 local residents died as a result of the muddled response. Read more
The first footage from inside one of Japan's tsunami-hit nuclear reactors at Fukushima has been released by the stricken plant's operator. Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) inserted an endoscope camera in Number 2 reactor to examine the interior. See more
Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant opened to reporters
Reporters have been allowed inside the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan for the first time since it was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in March. The journalists toured the plant wearing full protective clothing. Read more
Storm suspends work at Japan Fukushima nuclear plant
The operator of Japan's crippled nuclear plant has suspended some of its outdoor work due to a tropical storm, just days after it admitted it was not prepared for harsh weather. Heavy rain and strong winds are hitting north-east Japan, which was devastated in the 11 March earthquake and tsunami. Read more
Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is not fully prepared for heavy rain and winds of a typhoon heading towards the country, officials admit. Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), which runs the plant, said some reactor buildings were uncovered, prompting fears the storm may carry radioactive material into the air and sea. Typhoon Songda is expected to hit Japan as early as Monday. Read more
NASA Technology Looks Inside Japan's Nuclear Reactor
Design techniques honed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., for Mars rovers were used to create the rover currently examining the inside of Japan's nuclear reactors, in areas not yet deemed safe for human crews. The iRobot PackBot employs technologies used previously in the design of "Rocky-7," which served as a terrestrial test bed at JPL for the current twin Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. PackBot's structural features are modeled after Rocky-7, including the lightweight, high-torque actuators that control the rover; and its strong, lightweight frame structure and sheet-metal chassis. Japanese authorities have raised the severity rating of their nuclear crisis to the highest level, officials say. The decision was taken because of radiation measured at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant, NHK reported. Read more
Japan is to decommission four stricken reactors at the quake-hit Fukushima nuclear plant, the operator says. Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) made the announcement three weeks after failing to bring reactors 1 - 4 under control. Locals would be consulted on reactors 5 and 6 which were shut down safely. 'Fukushima nuclear' plant radiation detected in Glasgow
Low levels of radioactive iodine believed to be from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan have been detected in Glasgow. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said the concentration of iodine detected was "extremely low" and "not of concern for the public". Read more
Power reconnected to stricken Japanese nuclear reactors
In Japan, power lines have been reconnected to all six reactors at the stricken Fukushima plant. It is a significant step but more work is needed before electricity can run through them again and start cooling the leaking reactors. See more
