Discovery of an arsenic-friendly microbe refuted

The discovery of an arsenic-loving microbe that NASA said would rewrite biology textbooks and offered hope of life on other planets now looks like a case study in how science corrects its mistakes, researchers report.

Arsenic-based bacteria: Fact or fiction?

Remember the arsenic-munching bacteria from last year? They proved controversial when they were first reported, and the argument is rumbling on in a series of critical articles, just published in Science. The arsenic researchers are sticking to their guns - more or less.
Biologists quickly tore into the study, with most of the criticisms focusing on the researchers' experimental methods.

Note:
This old NASA press release was about the GFAJ-1 arsenic microbe found at Mono Lake.

A big finding about extraterrestrial life can be announced Thurs at a NASA press conference. In a move one would expect from a web-savvy business like Apple, NASA has scheduled a media event with a cryptic description that initiates a flurry of conjecture. Based on the list of scientists involved in the press conference, the statement could possibly be about an astrobiology discovery that hints at the possibility of life on nearby worlds.Source for this article - NASA announces Dec. 2 press conference on extraterrestrial life by Money Blog Newz.

Astrobiology found by NASA

In a statement about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration press conference, the space agency said that it will announce an astrobiology finding that will "impact the hunt for extraterrestrial life." The list of scientists participating within the press conference was the only other info released. Scientists working on the NASA astrobiology program contain a geologist, an oceanographer, an ecologist and a biologist. A panel discussion will be done by them. The NASA headquarters in Washington D.C. can be where the press conference is held at 2 p.m. EST.

Several wondering about life on Titan

Amid all the speculation about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration press conference, an idea has emerged that National Aeronautics and Space Administration might have found evidence of existence on Titan, Saturn's largest moon. An expert on geology for existence on Mars is Pamela Conrad who's part of the group of scientists attending. Also in attendance is Felisa Wolfe-Simon who is an oceanographer. The element arsenic is known on Titan and is one thing she has written about along with photosynthesis. Stephen Benner is a NASA Biologist. He has written about Earth and Titan having the same environment. The chemistry of environments that can have existence in them is what James Elser studies as an ecologist with NASAs astrobiology program.

Looking for extraterrestrial life is NASA

There have been a ton of discoveries within the extraterrestrial life search that National Aeronautics and Space Administration's press conference is following. The planet Gliese 581g was found to be one that could be able to hold liquid water. It was found in September within the Goldilocks Zone. NASA declared the finding of a planet on November 20th. Besides the stars in our solar system, the 500th planet orbiting other stars was discovered. There was a huge finding made by the Kepler Mission earlier this year. It found 156,00 stars with a feasible 700 alien worlds in a small section of space.
