At the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's H-IIB rocket rolled out to its launch pad on Jan. 21, in advance of its scheduled launch on Jan. 22. The rocket will carry the "Kounotori" 2 H-II Transfer Vehicle, or HTV cargo ship, to the International Space Station. Kounotori2 is loaded with more than four tons of supplies and spare parts for the complex and its six crewmembers.

A Japanese rocket carrying supplies for the International Space Station successfully lifted off from a remote island Saturday on a mission designed to help fill a hole left by the retirement of NASA's space shuttle program.
The unmanned rocket was carrying a payload of nearly six tons of food, water, clothing and experimental equipment to the astronauts in orbit in the space station, an international project involving 15 nations. The rocket also was carrying cargo for NASA.

Maki Maeda will become the first female flight director of an unmanned spacecraft that delivers scientific equipment, food and other supplies to the International Space Station when the craft is launched Thursday.
The HTV-2 will lift off from the Tanegashima Space Centre in Kagoshima Prefecture. Maeda, 38, will be one of three flight directors on duty around the clock at the Tsukuba Space Centre in Ibaraki Prefecture.

The launch of the H-IIB Launch Vehicle No. 2 (H-IIB F2) with the KOUNOTORI2 (HTV2, a cargo transporter to the International Space Station) onboard has been rescheduled as clouds including a freezing layer that exceeds the restrictions for suitable weather are forecast to be generated at around the scheduled launch time on January 20, 2011 (Japan Standard Time.)
The new launch day will be no earlier than January 22 (Sat.,) 2011 (Japan Standard Time, JST).

The JAXA H-II Trans Vehicle 2 (HTV2) is scheduled to launch aboard a    H-IIB rocket from Tanegashima Space Centre, Japan, at 06:29 GMT, 20th January, 2011.
The spacecraft will deliver supplies to the International Space Station.

"KOUNOTORI" Chosen as Nickname of the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) conducted a nickname campaign for the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), to familiarise people with the HTV.
Among many suggestions, the nickname "KOUNOTORI" meaning "white stork" was selected.
