As long as men have watched the skies, meteorites, have held a special fascination. The Fitzwater Pass Meteorite, announced this week, was found near Lakeview. It is not very big. However, others, like the legendary Willamette Meteorite, are more than 15 tons. Or the Goose Lake Iron, at 2,500 pounds, could hardly fit in your pocket. Nor could the Klamath Falls Meteorite, found in Antelope Valley near Swan Lake, in 1952. It was found by a man named Jack Halsell while logging, who said it was the heaviest rock he'd ever found. It rattled around in an old Folgers can for 30 years in Paul Albertson's Lakeview garage before he found out what it really was -- an interplanetary space traveller. Now, the thumb-size Fitzwater Pass meteorite that he picked up in 1976 while hunting for agates and jasper is generating interest from scientists worldwide. Read more __________________
