THE Ariane 5 generic launcher lift-off is scheduled during the night of December 21 to 22, 2005 as soon as possible within the following launch window:

KOUROU: Between 07:33pm and 08:01pm on December 21, 2005.
GMT: Between 22:33 and 23:01on December 21, 2005.
PARIS: Between 11:33pm and 12:01am on December 21-22, 2005.
WASHINGTON: Between 05:33pm and 06:01pm on December 21, 2005.

Arianespace's final Ariane 5 mission for 2005 took another step closer to lift-off with the launcher's transfer to the final assembly building at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.
The transfer occurred on December 7, and the launcher is now ready to receive its Indian INSAT-4A telecommunications satellite and the European MSG-2 meteorological spacecraft.

Follow the final preparations for the dual-satellite launch - The mission is on schedule for a December 21, lift-off.

Final preparations are on for the lift-off of India’s telecommunications satellite Insat-4A and the European meteorological satellite 2 Meteosat (MSG-2) on an Ariane 5 G rocket from the spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana on 21 December (around 2 am on 22 December India time).

The fourth generation Indian Communication satellite INSAT 4A will be launched by the generic Ariane Five launch from the European Spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana on December 22.

The heaviest satellite in the series, INSAT 4A, will be launched at around 0200 hrs (IST), ISRO Sources told UNI today.

The Satellite was being readied for launch at Kourou.

INSAT 4A would revolutionise Direct to Home (DTH) TV broadcasting and all its 24 Transponders-12 in Ku Band and 12 in C band have been fully booked. The Tata-Sky DTH service had already booked 11 ku band transponders that would enable entire India coverage and provide superior quality digital telecast. Use of all the 12 transponders would enable the user to provide 150 channels to each DTH user across the country.

INSAT 4-A satellite
According to ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair, the Indian Space Research Organisation will launch its INSAT 4-A satellite by the middle of next month that would enable Direct-to-Home broadcast services in the country.

The Indian Space Research Organisation is also working on an upgraded version of Geo-Synchronous Launch Vehicle, GSLV Marck-III, which would have the capability to place a four-tonne satellite into the Geo-Transfer Orbit. Its first developmental flight would take place in 2008.

Meanwhile, work was on to develop the cryogenic stage of GSLV which was expected to be ready for launch by next year-end.

The three-tonne INSAT 4A satellite is equipped with high-powered transponders - 12 C band and 12 Ku band - necessary for DTH services.

The satellite would be launched from a European vehicle Ariane from Kourou, French Guiana. The satellite had already been transported to the launch site.

Currently the country is using foreign satellites for DTH services. It would take about a month for the new satellite to be functional and commissioned after the launch.

The work was near completion to develop country's indigenously made cryogenic stage of GSLV, which would enable ISRO to launch satellites in the Geo-Transfer Orbit (GTO).

The cryogenic stage is the "last stage" of GSLV. Last three launches of GSLV had used a Russian cryogenic stage.

The total cryogenic stage consists of components such as engine, fuel tank, electronics, etc.

The upgraded version of GSLV, called GSLV Mark III, would have the capability to place a four-tonne satellite in GTO. The present GSLV is capable of placing 2.5 tonne-satellites in the GTO.

While GSLV Mark-I had used Russian-make cryogenic stage, GSLV Mark-II would use indigenous cryogenic stage, he said adding GSLV Mark-III would be indigenous upgraded version.

GSLV Mark-III would have a liquid propellant core in the first stage, two strap-on stages with 200 tonnes of solid propellant each, and a single 25-tonne cryogenic stage.

The current GSLV carries a 12-tonne cryogenic stage.

The development of cryogenic stage is being seen as a significant milestone. India had signed an agreement with Russia under which technology for the cryogenic stage was to be provided to ISRO but the deal was scrapped due to restrictions under the Missile Technology Control Regime. Work to develop a cryogenic stage started in 1995.

Problems with the rocket of the European space consortium Arianespace at Kourou in French Guyana has delayed the launch of India’s communication satellite INSAT-4A by a few months.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had readied the first spacecraft of the INSAT-4 series a couple of months back, but Arianespace was not in a position to blast it off from its spaceport.

"Unfortunately, the Ariane launch vehicle got into some problems. Now, they have recovered. They are giving us a launch date in December" -G Madhavan Nair, ISRO Chairman.

The launch is still expected in December.

India's direct-to-home (DTH) revolution will have to wait a little longer. The launch of Insat-4A has been delayed due to heavy schedule of French launch company Arianespace and is expected to be in orbit only in December.

Primarily a telecom satellite, with 12 ku band and 12 C-band transponders, and weighing around 3,200 kg, Insat-4A is the first in the series of fourth-generation satellites being planned to meet a growing demand for DTH satellite link telecast applications.
It was initially scheduled for launch in the first-half of this year, but has been consistently delayed.

"It was scheduled to be launched in August-September and then put off to November. It now appears the launch will be pushed further. I will be talking to Arianespace in the next few days and a date will be finalised" G. Madhavan Nair, chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The exact date is expected to be announced by mid-September. ISRO sources said the satellite, developed by ISRO, is ready.

"Tests have been conducted and it is ready for shipment to Kourou in French Guiana" sources said. However, ISRO is not worried.

Its relationship with Arianespace goes back over two decades when it launched Apple, an experimental geo-stationary satellite in 1981.
Since then, the French company has been successfully launching Indian satellites, especially the Insat 2 and 3 series, with agreements signed for the launch of 4A and 4B, which are similar in function.

"The delay was due to some technical problems. The company, which has satellites from other countries, had to change schedule" sources said.

The Insat-4 series has a set of seven satellites from 4A to 4G, with 4D being a spare.

All satellites are planned to be launched by 2007, by which time a total of about 250 transponders will be in space across various bands catering to a demand of up to 11 Gbps capacity.

The number has been decided based on the demand and requirement put forth by various users and departments.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G Madhavan Nair has said that the Insat-4A will be launched on 14 November from the second launch pad at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
Media reports indicate that Insat-4A will facilitate Direct To Home (DTH) service of the Indian Broadcasting Service.
The Insat-4A system had earlier been envisaged with a space segment comprising two multi-purpose satellites, each providing two high power TV broadcast and twelve telecommunications national coverage transponders, in addition to also providing meteorological services.
The last satellite in the Insat series to be launched was Insat-3E. Launched a couple of years ago it is an exclusive communication satellite to further augment the communication services that are being provided by the Insat System.
Commissioned in 1983, ISRO claims that Insat is the largest domestic communication satellite system in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Indian satellite will be launched from French Guyana in South America.
The three-ton Insat-4A will have 12 Ku band transponders for direct-to-home (DTH) satellite-link telecast applications and 12 C band communication transponders.

Insat-4A is the first in the INSAT-4 series, which is planned to have seven satellites. INSAT will have about 225 active transponders in various frequency bands by 2007, which can cater to the demand up to 11 GBPS capacity with the present day technology.
