DU's Swasey Observatory celebrates 100th anniversary

Denison University has changed a lot since 1910.
Students walk to class carrying cell phones and laptops in an area that used to be a forest.
Street lamps shine beams of light into what used to be a jet-black sky.
Although the world around it has changed, the Swasey Observatory has remained on campus, providing students and Licking County residents a chance to explore the night sky.
Denison is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the observatory and its telescope this year.

Denison is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the observatory, and its telescope, this year.
Located just beyond Swasey Chapel, the white marble building was dedicated June 15, 1910, in honour of former Denison trustee Ambrose Swasey.
Swasey, a tool manufacturer from Cleveland, donated the money to build the observatory.

Open house set at Swasey Observatory

As part of the ongoing celebration of the 100th anniversary of Swasey Observatory, the Denison University Department of Physics and Astronomy will host an open house beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the observatory, 300 Chapel Drive.
