Meteosat-6 re-orbited

After more than 17 years of service, Meteosat-6 - the longest operating Meteosat First Generation satellite - was moved to a graveyard orbit on 15 April, 2011.
Meteosat-6 was launched on November 20, 1993, from Kourou, French Guiana.

Weather satellite sets new service record

Europe's series of Meteosat satellites has been improving the accuracy of weather forecasts for over 30 years. Meteosat-6 has recently broken the record for the operational life of one of these robust missions.
The first Meteosat was launched in 1977 and also goes down in history as ESA's first Earth observation mission.
