New wooden henge, a circular ditch that aligns with world-famous monument, deemed site's most exciting find in a lifetime

Without a sod of earth being dug up, a new henge, a circular ditch which probably enclosed a ring of timber posts and may have been used for feasting, has been discovered within sight of Stonehenge.
Professor Vince Gaffney, of Birmingham university, described the discovery of the new monument, only 900 metres away and apparently contemporary to the 5,000-year-old stone circle, as the most exciting find at Stonehenge in a lifetime.

A new henge discovered at Stonehenge

History is set to be rewritten after an archaeology team led by the University of Birmingham and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology in Austria discovered a major ceremonial monument less than one kilometre away from the iconic Stonehenge.
The incredible find has been hailed by Professor Vince Gaffney, from the Universitys IBM Visual and Spatial Technology Centre, as one of the most significant yet for those researching the UKs most important prehistoric structure.
The new henge was uncovered this week, just two weeks into a three-year international study that forms part of the multi-million Euro international Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project.

Is Stonehenge worth £51m?

Stonehenge presently attracts around 900,000 visitors a year, at an average price of about £5 per head. Multiply that long-term - by 25 years, say - and that means the monument is worth over £112 million.

The Monty Python knights who craved a shrubbery were not so far off the historical mark: archaeologists have uncovered startling evidence of The Great Stonehenge Hedge.
Inevitably dubbed Stonehedge, the evidence from a new survey of the Stonehenge landscape suggests that 4,000 years ago the world's most famous prehistoric monument was surrounded by two circular hedges, planted on low concentric banks.

Archaeologists have discovered evidence of a lost stone circle on the west bank of the River Avon, a mile from Stonehenge.
The new circle, being called 'Bluestonehenge', is 10m in diameter and was surrounded by a henge - a ditch with an external bank.
The circle of stones - no longer present - would have marked the end of the Avenue, a 2.8 km processional route that leads from the River Avon to Stonehenge, which was constructed at the end of the Stone Age (the Neolithic period).

After nearly three decades of disputes over cost and conservation, Stonehenge is to be freed from the traffic-clogged main road slicing through its historic setting.
Under a scheme to be put to planners tomorrow by English Heritage, which manages the 5,000-year-old monument, a 1.3-mile stretch of the A344 will be closed and a new visitors centre and car park will be built.

Over the years, there have been several attempts to do something about it and we are delighted that in May our latest proposals were given the go-ahead in principle by the Government.  Airman's Corner was announced as the selected location for a new visitor centre together with the closure of the A344.
