Europe's new way to experiment in partial gravity

A new way to fly experiments takes off tomorrow with the first campaign dedicated to research in 'partial' gravity. Scientists on Europe's 'Zero-G' Airbus will experiment with gravity conditions like those on the Moon and Mars.
The Joint European Partial-g Parabolic Flight campaign is an unprecedented research mission organised jointly by ESA and the French and German space agencies, CNES and DLR.

Now calling passengers for the Moon and Mars

You can do a lot in 25 seconds! Like simulating weightlessness, lunar gravity or martian surface operations aboard an A300 Zero-G aircraft flying on a special trajectory. ESA is now calling for scientists to come along.
Creating 'zero gravity' with an aircraft is nothing new: ESA has been providing opportunities for research during parabolic flights for over 25 years. During each special parabolic flight, up to 20 seconds of weightlessness can be achieved and, by repeating the manoeuvre several times, up to 10 minutes of zero weight in total can be experienced during one flight.

Teams selected for 'Fly Your Thesis!' 2010 microgravity programme

Your Thesis!' programme in 2009, four teams of university students have been selected to conduct their microgravity experiments during a second series of parabolic flights aboard an aircraft.
The teams, made up of students from five ESA Member States, were chosen from 12 teams whose proposals were short-listed in September 2009.

Parabolic flights with aircraft have provided microgravity conditions for scientific research, technology testing and astronaut training for the last 25 years in Europe. Now the flights can reach further into space: with a very special flight plan, the European Zero-G Airbus can imitate gravity conditions on the Moon and Mars.

ESA's 'Fly Your Thesis!' programme made its successful debut during ESA's 51st Parabolic Flight Campaign, held 25 October to 5 November. Four student teams from five European countries took advantage of this new educational initiative to conduct microgravity experiments on the Airbus A300 'Zero G' aircraft.

ESA's 51st Parabolic Flight Campaign took place this week in Bordeaux, France. Fourteen scientific experiments were conducted by European scientists under microgravity conditions on the modified Airbus A300 aircraft. Four of the experiments were conducted by student teams as part of ESA's 'Fly Your Thesis!' programme.
