The final countdown began today at the Launch-Minus 11 hour, 30 minute mark. That was followed by a check of electrical systems.
Fuelling of the first stage and new cryogenic upper stage with super-cold load of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen commenced at the final five hours before lift-off time.


Time Events
T – 11 h 30m Start of final countdown
T – 7 h 30m Check of electrical systems
T – 5 h 50m Start of filling of main cryogenic stage with liquid oxygen and hydrogen
T – 3 h 20m Chill down of Vulcain main stage engine

Chill down of Vulcain main stage engine will start in about 25 minutes

The beefed-up heavy-lift version of the Ariane 5 launcher - known as the Ariane 5-ECA - has flown successfully only once before, in February 2005
The Ariane 5-ECA is designed to haul payloads of up to 10 tonnes into orbit.

Its predecessor - the Ariane 5-Generic - can deliver about six tonnes to a geostationary transfer orbit.
The two solid boosters of the beefed-up version have been engineered to carry more propellant and there is more thrust from a new cryogenic upper stage.



"We are going to put a record payload into orbit. We will show that we can launch the heaviest payloads from Kourou" - Arianespac spokesperson.

The launch readiness review (RAL) took place in Kourou on Thursday, November 10, 2005 and authorized count-down operations for the SPACEWAY 2 - TELKOM 2 Flight.

The Arianespace Flight, an Ariane 5 ECA will be orbiting two payloads on its fourth flight of the year: the Spaceway 2 high-definition direct broadcast satellite for American operator DIRECTV, and the Telkom 2 communications satellite for Indonesian operator PT Telekomunikasi.
It will be launched from the Ariane launch complex N° 3 (ELA3), in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Ariane 5 ECA launcher lift-off for this Flight is scheduled during the night of November 12 to 13, 2005 as soon as possible within the following launch window:

KOUROU: Between 08:45pm and 09:30pm on November 12, 2005.
GMT: Between 11:45pm and 00:30am on November 12-13, 2005.
PARIS: Between 00:45am and 01:30am on November 13, 2005.
WASHINGTON: Between 07:45pm and 08:30pm on November 12, 2005.

Arianespace Flight Spaceway 2 - Telkom 2: launch delayed by 48 hours

In order to carry out additional verifications, Arianespace has decided to postpone the launch by 48 hours.

The launch is now scheduled during the night of Saturday, November 12 to Sunday, November 13, 2005.

Indonesia's Telkom-2 satellite will be launched on Nov. 10, 2005, aboard an Ariene-5ECA rocket Flight No. 167.

"Currently, Talcom-2 satellite had been located at the launching site since September 23, 2005 to undergo several tests" - Garuda Sugardo, Vice President Director of PT Telcom.

Telcom-2 satellite will be located at 118 degrees east above Indonesian territory and replace the Palapa B4 satellite whos term of operation ended in 2004.

The satellite, made since 2002 by the Orbital Science Corp. of the United States, is a Star-2 Bus type satellite with a capacity of 24 transponder.
The total cost for launching of the satellite is 170 million US dollars.

The satellite will operate for 15 years with scope of area including ASEAN and the surrounding areas.

So far, Indonesia has launched eight satellites, namely Palapa A-1, Palapa A-2, Palapa B-1, Palapa B-2, Palapa B2P, Palapa B2R, Palapa-B4 and Telcom-1.

The Ariane 5 ECA launch of Spaceway 2 and Telkom 2 is set for November 10.

Arianespace has scheduled the next Ariane 5 launch for Thursday, November 10. An Ariane 5 ECA launcher will orbit the Spaceway 2 and Telkom 2 satellites.
Lift-off is scheduled within the following launch window:

23:44 to 00:29 GMT, November 10-11
8:44 to 9:29 pm on Thursday, November 10 in Kourou, French Guiana
7:44 to 8:29 pm in Washington, DC
12:44 to 1:29 am on Friday, November 11 in Paris.

Orbital Sciences Corporation announced today that the TELKOM-2 communications satellite will arrive back at the company's Dulles, Virginia satellite manufacturing facility later this week.
The satellite will undergo evaluation and tests to determine the root cause of a power supply anomaly that was detected while being prepared for launch in Kourou, French Guiana. The decision to return the satellite to Orbital's facility was made in agreement with the satellite program's customer, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT TELKOM).

"As with all important decisions in our business, the decision to return the TELKOM-2 satellite to the Dulles manufacturing facility was made with high product quality standards as our first priority. While this action will result in additional work to be performed on the satellite and a delay in its launch, these concerns are secondary to delivering a highly reliable satellite for our customer." - Dr. Ali Atia, President of Orbital Communications International, Orbital's communications satellite business unit

Orbital completed production of the TELKOM-2 satellite in November 2004. The satellite was shipped to French Guiana at the end of May 2005 for a launch that was scheduled in late June.
Following its arrival at the Kourou launch site, a problem in the spacecraft's power subsystem was discovered during pre-launch testing.
Orbital judged that returning TELKOM-2 to the Dulles facility would be the best course of action in order to identify the root cause of the problem, perform corrective actions and thoroughly re-test the spacecraft.
Orbital made this decision solely from a standpoint of achieving the highest quality satellite.

Orbital is preparing to launch two other communication satellites later this year for PanAmSat Corporation.
The Galaxy-14 satellite is currently scheduled for launch aboard a Soyuz rocket in the third quarter and Galaxy-15 is also slated for a third quarter launch aboard an Ariane-5 rocket.
These launch dates are not expected to be affected by the TELKOM-2 activities.
