NORAD, USNORTHCOM support space shuttle launch

The North American Aerospace Defence Command and U.S. Northern Command, through the Continental NORAD Region and Air Forces Northern, will provide support to the NASA space shuttle mission scheduled to launch Feb. 24.

Final flight of space shuttle Discovery to carry two payloads built by CU-Boulder

Following a more than three-month delay due to technical problems, NASA's space shuttle Discovery will make its final flight Feb. 24 from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida carrying two University of Colorado Boulder-built biomedical payload devices.
One of the experiments is designed to help scientists better understand changes in the virulence of bacteria in the low gravity of space as a way to help researchers prevent or control infectious diseases. The second is a cell cultivation experiment in a tropical plant known to produce nuts that could be used to make biofuels, said Louis Stodieck, director of BioServe Space Technologies in CU-Boulder's aerospace engineering sciences department.

NASA Sets Launch Date for Space Shuttle Discovery Mission

Space shuttle Discovery is scheduled to begin an 11-day mission to the International Space Station with a launch at 4:50 p.m. EST on Thursday, Feb. 24, from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The STS-133 mission is Discovery's final scheduled flight.

Astronaut Steve Bowen Named To STS-133 Space Shuttle Crew; Media Teleconference scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CST

NASA selected astronaut Steve Bowen as a mission specialist on STS-133, the next space shuttle mission planned for launch on Feb. 24. Bowen replaces astronaut Tim Kopra, who was injured in a bicycle accident over the weekend. The agency will hold a media teleconference at 3:30 p.m. CST on Wednesday, Jan. 19, to discuss the change in crew personnel.

Discovery astronaut injured in bicycle accident

An astronaut slated to launch on space shuttle Discovery next month was injured Saturday in a bicycle accident.
Mission specialist Tim Kopra's injuries were not life threatening, NASA officials said. "However, there could be an impact to his duties for shuttle Discovery's STS-133 mission," the agency said in a statement.

NASA says it finally knows what caused the cracking in space shuttle Discovery's fuel tank.
Discovery's final voyage has been on hold since November. If the remaining repairs go well, the shuttle could fly to the space station as early as Feb. 24 at 4:50 p.m.
