Everest cosmic radiation levels 'significant'

Climbers tackling Everest receive a radiation dose five times more than the average annual exposure of a UK nuclear power worker, new research suggests.
Scottish mountaineer Bob Kerr gathered cosmic radiation readings on an expedition to the mountain last year.
His findings have been published by the Society for Radiological Protection.

For decades, Everest had been the ultimate climbing goal and reporters were desperate to break the news first.

Everest pioneer Stephen Venables marks anniversary

The first Briton to climb Mount Everest without the use of supplementary oxygen is planning to mark the 25th anniversary of his ascent.
Stephen Venables, from Bath, scaled the summit in 1988 alone, after climbing with a trio of American-Canadian men on a new route up the Kangshung Face.

Nepal in new bid to finally settle Mount Everest height

Nepal is seeking help from the international community to settle a long-running dispute about the height of Mount Everest, officials have said.
Although China had argued about how the peak's height should be measured, the countries agreed Nepal's figure of 8,848m (in 2010.

Early expeditions to Everest

It is 90 years since the first British expedition to the world's highest mountain - but the jagged peaks and deep crevasses of the Himalayas successfully defended Everest's summit from human footsteps for another three decades.
To mark the anniversary of the first trip in 1921, the Royal Geographical Society is staging an exhibition of the most evocative expedition images - culminating with Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's successful 1953 ascent. Take a look - with mountaineer and travel photographer Martin Hartley.
