A solar eclipse from space. The moon passes between NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and the sun. In a first for NASA's SDO, a project designed to help us understand the Sun's influence on Earth and Near-Earth space by studying the solar atmosphere, the new moon was recorded passing between the craft and the sun causing an eclipse. Astronomers seeking to predict solar storms are receiving the first trickles of a wealth of new data, scientists reported this week at a meeting of the Committee on Space Research in Bremen, Germany. The data come from a new satellite, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which became operational in late April. Read more
For five years SDO mission will inspect the solar magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role chemicals play in the Sun's atmosphere and Earth's climate. According Since the launch of engineers have been doing testing and verification of spacecraft components. This observatory will upload the 1.5 terabytes of data per day, equal to 500 000 songs on an MP3 player. Read more
NASA's New Eye on the Sun Delivers Stunning First Images
NASA's recently launched Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, is returning early images that confirm an unprecedented new capability for scientists to better understand our suns dynamic processes. These solar activities affect everything on Earth. Some of the images from the spacecraft show never-before-seen detail of material streaming outward and away from sunspots. Others show extreme close-ups of activity on the suns surface. The spacecraft also has made the first high-resolution measurements of solar flares in a broad range of extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory has provided an astonishing new vista on our convulsing star. The first public release of images from the satellite record huge explosions and great looping prominences of gas. The observatory's super-fine resolution is expected to help scientists get a better understanding of what drives solar activity. Read more
