The race to detect the "God Particle" is heating up. A US "atom smasher" called the Tevatron may have its life extended to continue searching for the Higgs boson.
Rolf Dieter Heuer is director-general of Cern (The European Organisation for Nuclear Research), which operates the Large Hadron Collider - the major European rival to the Tevatron.
In an interview with the BBC's Paul Rincon, Dr Heuer said he hoped that Europe would be first to detect the Higgs particle.

First results from Large Hadron Collider

Liverpool scientists have presented some of the first results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) - the world's largest scientific experiment - at the International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP) opened in Paris this week by President Sarkozy.
Based 100m below ground at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, the LHC is the most powerful particle accelerator ever built and is seeking answers to some of the most fundamental mysteries of the Universe, from anti-matter to dark matter and the existence of extra dimensions.

Giant collider back in gear, sets record for collision intensity
On Nov. 30, the world's largest scientific instrument, the Large Hadron Collider, set a record when it smashed one stream of protons against another and then accelerated the beams to 1.18 trillion electron volts, exceeding the record held by Fermilab in Illinois since 2001.

The Proton Synchrotron first accelerated protons on 24 November 1959, becoming for a brief period the worlds highest energy particle accelerator.
The Proton Synchrotron is a key component in CERNs accelerator complex, where it accelerates protons delivered by the PS Booster or heavy ions from the Low Energy Ion Ring.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann said Monday the country would not quit the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) after all, in remarks coming after protests by scientists and politicians in the past days. Science Minister Johannes Hahn had announced the plan to end Austria's membership in CERN on May 7 in order to free funds for other multinational research projects.

Austria has announced that it will withdraw from CERN, Europe's premier high-energy physics laboratory, which is located near Geneva, Switzerland. The announcement - just months before the restart of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's most powerful particle accelerator - has left Austrian physicists stunned.
